How to Maintain Good Working Relationships

15th August 2019

Having good working relationships with your colleagues is essential for your team to function effectively. You should be able to deal with disagreements and differences in a constructive way, be honest with each other and work together to find solutions to issues that occur.

Resolve issues efficiently and effectively

Always encourage feedback! Giving and receiving constructive feedback is an easy way to prevent problems in a working relationship. If this doesn't prevent problems occurring, being open with communication can resolve a negative situation quickly and effectively. Often individuals are looking for a fair process to resolve issues quickly as they arise. The simple act of talking about problems and sharing perceptions of what has gone wrong is often enough to resolve them.

Develop your people skills

The ability to collaborate, communicate and deal with conflict, are all good examples of people skills. People skills are vital when you are leading a team. Consider your team and their personalities and where they may need assistance in dealing with other people in the workplace. A good way to approach this is to undertake personality profiling using methods such as DISC, this will help you understand each individual and how their personality fits within your team.

Appreciate others

Show your appreciation whenever someone helps you, complimenting those around you when they do something which you are genuinely grateful for. Not only will this make people feel valued within your team, but it will also enable you to keep the door open to those compliments in return which will remind you when you’re doing something well!

Be positive

Staying positive in the workplace will help strengthen your relationships with colleagues. Nobody wants to be around negative people as it can spread. Instead, practice positive behaviours and try to maintain this throughout your working day.

Ensure that all of your employees understand what success looks like. What should they be doing at work, how to do it and who to speak to if they need help. All employees should feel as if they can communicate effectively with each other and you. Show appreciation for your employees’ day to day and celebrate the small wins.
