Social media can be such a valuable tool, whether you are looking for a new role or already employed you can really use it to your advantage. Platforms such as LinkedIn and Twitter are full of professionals sharing their expertise and networking with other professionals. If used correctly, social media can really be used to your advantage.

Be Professional

When evaluating your social media think about what you want to be known for. If you would like to come across as professional, you should use a headshot of yourself to show you mean business. You should also make sure any personal accounts are truly private by changing your settings, but you should still avoid any inappropriate images on these accounts. Your online persona could be the first thing that a potential employer will see so make a good impression and tidy up your social media!

Get Involved

Take a look at who you are following on social media. It’s a great idea to follow influencers and thought leaders in your sector. Once you have found the right people to connect with get involved in the conversation. You will have access to the latest news and information in your industry and the opinions of prominent figures. Interacting by sharing posts and leaving comments shows how interested you are in your chosen field.

Stay Connected

Remember to follow and connect with people you work with and meet through networking. This will really help you further down the line. These people may have interesting advice or opinions on things which you may not have thought about and this could help you with your career. Having connections can be really helpful when looking for a new role or advice in your current role.

Experience

Link to your website or online portfolio, include your experience clearly on your profile and provide information about your accomplishments. You must show things that you really want to be known for, this could spark conversations or be beneficial to you when you are looking for a role as you will be open to head hunters.

Expertise

Use your social media to keep updated in what is going on in your field. There are great articles circulating around which will keep you updated and you may find interesting. Show your expertise and share knowledge. If you feel confident, write content surrounding your interests in your professional life this will make you come across as knowledgeable to anyone looking at you online.
