Taking your Wellbeing Seriously Working from Home

30th April 2020

To avoid burn out it so important at this time we really focus on both our physical and mental wellbeing. We have compiled some key things which you should consider doing to look after your wellbeing at present.

Keep a Routine

No matter what you are seeing online don’t feel the pressure to learn a new language or take up origami. Sticking to your routine is enough at the moment. Get up on time, have a shower and get dressed for the day. Take this opportunity to wear something more comfortable but do make the effort to change in the morning and evenings. This will help you distinguish between leisure time and work time. If this means you wear your work clothes, go ahead and do it. Although I’d rather opt for something a little more comfortable!

If you are a parent, this routine may need to adapt to your children, but having those simple steps in the day will help you feel a little more normal in unexpected situations.

Have a Finish Time

Make sure that you have a set time to finish work. It’s easy to work into the evening when you are at home as you have extra time. Some of us have nothing else productive to be getting on with at the moment so it can be tempting. Instead, use your extra time to cook a nutritious meal and unwind from the day, you could also fit in some exercise! This will help you stay refreshed for your next day at work.

Take Regular Breaks

Working from home can mean that you have more time to get stuck into tasks and get them done to a great standard. You may also find that you will complete things quicker than you ever could in the office. Because of this don’t feel guilty about having regular breaks. Reward yourself with an extra cup of tea or a longer walk at lunchtime. Have a weekend, acknowledge we can’t do too much but let yourself have a break

Keep in Touch

Ensure that you're keeping in touch with your team and seeing their faces.  Have a quick 10-minute Zoom call each day to have a chat or talk about any struggles you may be having. Speak about the things you are doing which are making a positive impact on your work too!  We are social beings, so staying connected is so important for your mental wellbeing.

 Give Yourself a Break

Not literally, we have already covered that point. Whether its juggling children, missing loved ones, health, general fear about Coronavirus, too much work or job security. We are in a world that 2 months ago no-one would have anticipated us being in. It is hard, and regardless of what your battle is. So, it's okay to not be perfect right now.

Getting by and staying safe is enough.  So, cut yourself some slack if you're struggling to meet work deadlines or it turns out you aren’t the best teacher. I’m sure your company will be understanding, and your children will laugh about your teaching skills in years to come!

Just remember we will all get to the end of this very soon, so keeping on top of your wellbeing is important for your long-term mental and physical health.
