How to: Stay Motivated at Work

It can be tough to stay motivated at work, especially if you’ve had the same role for a while, you may become complacent in your role. If you feel like you are stuck in a rut you may need to change things up at work. No matter what is causing you to become unmotivated at work there is always a solution.

Are you guilty of skipping your lunch break? You aren’t the only one. When the workload is high you may feel like taking a break from work is counterproductive, but not taking regular breaks can send you into a cycle of demotivation which will cause you to do less work in the long term. Ensure you are getting enough rest, if you work at a computer take regular breaks from your desk and screen, this will help you feel more focused. Maintaining a good work-life balance is key to feeling more productive and motivated at work.

Wellbeing at work is essential in order to run on full motivation and productivity, ensure you are eating well and exercising. You will be surprised how this can really boost your motivation and help you switch off from work, which is really important for you to be productive day after day. Take advantage of any well-being programs your company has to offer. Keeping fit and healthy, both physically and mentally will allow you to feel a lot more relaxed in your personal life and therefore in your work life too.

Commit to doing your best at work. How many of us feel demotivated but aren’t really doing the best that we could do? You may feel demotivated because you aren’t doing the best work you could be doing. Make time to do your work to the best of your ability. This makes your rest more rewarding and work less stressful in the long term. Everybody is guilty of this, but by putting your full attention into your work and focusing on the work in hand you will find that you will be more productive. Think about how motivated you feel when you produce a great piece of work or complete a task and you wasted no time stressing about it and just did it. This instantly becomes more rewarding and can create more of a positive and motivational attitude at work.

Ask for feedback, it is so easy to lose motivation if you don’t really know how you are doing at work! Make sure you are receiving regular feedback. Ensure you are also given an opportunity to give your own feedback. This is essential to make you feel like you are valuable to the team. Find out from your manager what you are doing well and what you can improve upon, a great time to get positive feedback is when you feel that you may not be performing at your full potential, a good manager will also give you some helpful tips on how to improve.
