Q&A with the Mayor of Stevenage

18th April 2019

As a recruitment agency based in Stevenage we understand that it is important to get involved with the community and what it has to offer, especially in terms of employment. We had the delight of speaking to the Mayor of Stevenage, Margaret Notley, as she approaches the end of her term in May, to see what she thinks of her overall time as Mayor and the great work she has helped to achieve.

What inspired you to run for Mayor of Stevenage?

Firstly, it is a huge honour to be Mayor and a great opportunity to meet many organisations, not only in Stevenage but within the surrounding area, something I enjoy doing. So knowing I would be able to do that inspired me to put my name forward.

What has made you most proud to be Mayor of Stevenage?

As the motto of the Town is:- The Heart of A Town Lies in its People. I enjoy being able to represent and promote Stevenage, the Town and it’s People.

How could we get more people in Stevenage more involved in the community?

There are many people in Stevenage who are already involved in the Community with various charities, community events and volunteering. But I think the best way to get even more people involved, is for those who are already connected to the many organisations we have in Stevenage is to talk to friends and relatives about them and encourage them to get involved. As doing so is very rewarding.

What great things have your beneficiaries; Carers in Hertfordshire, Tracks Autism and Stevenage District Scouts been able to achieve since May?

As Carers in Hertfordshire, TRACKS Autism and The Stevenage District Scouts are my chosen Charities, I have been able to promote them and raise their profile in the Community, making more people aware of them. They have all been very active in my fundraising events, organised on their behalf. I hope the money that will be raised by the end of my term will be able to help them achieve their various goals.

Is Stevenage doing anything to help young people to get into employment?

The overall unemployment rate in Stevenage is very low. Many Stevenage firms have vast opportunities aimed at the young people to get into employment and Stevenage Borough Council offer many varied Apprenticeships. We also work in Partnership with organisations, including North Hertfordshire College to devolve their skills set for the job market.

How can young people use the resources available in the community to transition easily into employment?

There are many resources available in the community for young people to transcend into employment. One way is to volunteer with an organisation that you have an interest and would like to make a career in.

I would also encourage young people to speak to friends and family about ideas and ways to enter into the world of work and how to identify their first step on the career ladder.
