Going for an Interview - Part 2 - Company Research

6th October 2016

Do the company's services or products interest you? Why would this be important?  If you discover something about a potential employer that really interests you then when you're being interviewed you will find that this interest comes across. Candidates that are enthused about a particular product or service can inspire others.  Companies love their employees to be passionate about their business!

Does this enable you to add value to the employer? If you think about it, if you're interested in something then the likelihood is you know more about it. So engage with that product and yes the chances are you could add value.  If you're passionate about something it will be spotted and the employer will recognise this fact. Candidates passionate about the products and services offered by an employer have more chance of employment.

Where is the companies industry or sector going? Look for developments that exist and think about what the future is for this particular employer. Visit their website and then their competitor’s websites as well. Use this information as inspiration for questions at your interview. Again if you appear influenced by the future the chances are you'll come across as a much more interested and well prepared candidate.

What is the future direction of the company? If this is going to include you then it is important you understand their ambitions. Find out the company’s future goals and targets, along with their history. This will help you understand the employer more clearly.

What are the companies short, medium and long-term plans? This is the type of question that a potential interviewer might well ask you. If you are successful at interview stage where do you see yourself in the next five years should you be employed by the company? The interviewer will be interested to know where you see yourself going within their business.

Do you share the company's vision and values? Initially it's just great to find out what these are, if you don't know already. Connect with the company's vision, read their mission statement. Understand what this is and then embrace it.
