15 CV Writing Tips

6th October 2016

Here are some tips to help you write and construct a successful CV.

1) Employers do not want to wade through pages of CV. Try and keep it to a maximum of two pages unless they have specified something in particular that needs to be covered.

2) Using bullet points when listing job experiences is an effective way to shorten content.

3) Tailor each CV for the individual job. A generic CV may not hit the mark and highlight your key skills and experience clearly enough.

4) Carefully space your CV, ensure the layout is easy to read and follow.

5) Make sure you re-read the CV at least twice and check carefully for spelling and grammar mistakes.

6) Do not be afraid to highlight your strengths – the purpose of a CV is to sell your relevant skills and experience!

7) Make a list of your work achievements and pick out the best and most relevant ones for your CV.

8) Ask someone you can trust to give you constructive feedback.

9) Monitor your rejection rate. If your CV doesn't seem to be getting you interviews analyse why and revamp it.

10) Don't forget that employers are looking to get a feel for what kind of person you are, include topics like hobbies and interests to show this.

11) Look at the company's website. It may well help you focus on more relevant content.

12) Make sure you print your CV out on good quality paper.

13) When you've printed out your CV put it in a folder or sleeve to protect it.

14) Print an additional two copies.  You may need to supply another interviewee or at least have an additional copy for you to use for reference in an interview.

15) Keep a list of the companies you send CV's too so you can track your progress.
