6th October 2016

If you want to change your career path then what are your options? Below we list some great tips on things to consider that may help.

1)      Registering with a reliable recruitment consultancy will open up lots of options. They will be able to show you what is out there in a range of markets and advise you on areas you may be able to move into.
2)      Additional training could be an option. Colleges provide work base training and education programmes, potentially short courses, which will open up new fields. Look up your local College and ask about short courses and how these courses may assist you in changing career.
3)      Training within your field may also open up new opportunities you never knew were available. If you’re currently part of a large company then there may be other departments you could transfer into if you were able to undertake additional training.
4)      Go back to your CV and examine what you’ve done over the years. Think about what parts of jobs you have really enjoyed and see if there are any roles out there that incorporate these duties.
5)      Go online and search a range of recruitment websites to get an idea of the types of jobs that are out there. Also check the websites of companies you might be interested in working for because most have a vacancies page that will list current job opportunities.
6)      Transferable skills is a phrase you’ll hear a lot if trying to change career paths. These are skills you have learnt in your current or past roles, which can be applied to other different jobs. Go through your CV and identify your transferable skills.
7)      Education. Going back to University or College maybe seem like a long route into a new career but if you’re looking at changing to a professional role then you may need to do so. These days there are courses specifically designed to channel students into job positions.  These are also run on a part-time basis so can be carried out whilst you are working.
8)      Stay in your current position while finding out your options, unless you have other means of financially supporting yourself. Being employed even if in a different field makes you an appealing candidate and highlights your commitment.
9)      Ask advice from someone in the area you want to move into. This will hopefully reveal some truths about your chosen new career path, which might ultimately affect your choice.
10)   Do not give up! If you’re having to retrain or educate yourself then it may be a long journey. To make a career change can be a big decision but you’re doing it for a good reason so keep it in mind all the time.

Good Luck!
