Money Matters: Understanding the Link Between Financial Stress and Mental Health at Work

Money worries are one of the most significant; and hidden, drivers of stress, anxiety, and poor mental health in the workplace. Ongoing cost-of-living pressures mean that employees across all income levels may be experiencing financial strain, which can directly impact wellbeing, attendance, performance, and retention.

This interactive session, delivered by Mind in Mid Herts, is for organisations who want to better understand the relationship between financial wellbeing and mental health, and learn what employers can realistically do to support their staff.

The session will explore how financial stress affects mental health and behaviour at work, how it can present as performance or conduct issues, and why early, compassionate intervention matters. Attendees will gain practical guidance on recognising warning signs, having supportive conversations, and signposting employees to appropriate internal and external support without overstepping professional boundaries.

Drawing on current research and best practice, the session will also cover effective employer tools such as financial education, salary-linked support options, employee assistance programmes, and partnerships with specialist organisations. Particular attention will be given to supporting staff through ongoing cost-of-living pressures in a way that is inclusive, sustainable, and aligned with a mentally healthy workplace culture.

Participants will leave with increased confidence, clear takeaways, and practical actions they can apply immediately within their organisation to help reduce financial stress, protect mental health, and foster a more supportive working environment.
